Leslie Alfonso Davies was Born on 21st Mar 1916 in Saint Lucia after my Great Grandparents Joseph and Beatrice Davies moved from Blue Mountain Jamaica.

In 1940 My Grandfather Joined the British Merchant Navy aboard the SS Graigwen Where he served as a chefs steward, here he planed menus controlled stock and compiled supply lists.

I remember him telling me his Other duties included baking bread and pastries, Cooking the crew Fish Dishes from His mother’s Cookbook along with unwinding playing Chess and the card game Patience (this would prove valuable in life as later had 5 girls in Cardiff) The SS Graigwen Of Duncan & Co Ltd, Port Glasgow, Owned by Idwal Williams & Co, Cardiff and stationed in Tiger Bay Cardiff.

On What would be Grandfather’s Voyage Leaving New York as part of a Supply Convoy through the Mediterranean.

At 22.11 hours on 9 Oct 1940 U-103 (Schütze) attacked convoy SC-6 in grid AM 1762 (37 miles north-northwest of Rockall) and sank two ships, Zannes Gounaris and Delphin and damaged my Grandfathers Ship the Graigwen.

At 21.33 hours on 10 Oct 1940 the abandoned Graigwen (Master Daniel Wright Fowle) was sunk by a coup de grâce by U-123. Seven crew members were lost.

The master, 25 crew members and one gunner were picked up by the HMS Enchantress a few days later And brought back to the UK.
